چکیده

Models are essential in a decision support system for river basin management. In a decision support system for integrated planning and management, the use of appropriate models is important to avoid models being either too simple or too complex. In this paper, appropriate models refer to models that are good-enough-but-not-more-than-that to obtain an acceptable ranking of river engineering measures under uncertainty. A systematic approach called ‘appropriateness framework’ is proposed to determine appropriate models that can be used in a decision support system. The approach is applied to a decision support system for the Dutch Meuse River. One important component of this decision support system, flood safety, is used in this paper to demonstrate how this approach works. The results show that the approach is very useful in helping to determine appropriate models. Potential applications of the approach in other decision support systems are discussed. The approach presented in this paper is designed as a tool to stimulate the communication between decision makers and modelers and to promote the use of models in decision-making for river basin management. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Appropriate Models In Decision Support Systems For River Basin Management

In recent years, new ideas and techniques appear very quickly, like sustainability, adaptive management, Geographic Information System, Remote Sensing and participations of new stakeholders, which contribute a lot to the development of decision support systems in river basin management. However, the role of models still needs to be emphasized, especially for model-based decision support systems...

Anticipating climate change: knowledge use in participatory flood management in the river Meuse

Given the latest knowledge on climate change, the Dutch government wants to anticipate the increased risk of flooding. For the river Meuse in The Netherlands, the design discharge is estimated to increase from 3800m/s to 4600m/s. With the existing policy of “Room for the River”, this increase is to be accommodated without raising the dikes. At the same time the floodplains are often claimed for...

Focus on health information technology, electronic health records and their financial impact: A framework for evaluating the appropriateness of clinical decision support alerts and responses

OBJECTIVE Alerting systems, a type of clinical decision support, are increasingly prevalent in healthcare, yet few studies have concurrently measured the appropriateness of alerts with provider responses to alerts. Recent reports of suboptimal alert system design and implementation highlight the need for better evaluation to inform future designs. The authors present a comprehensive framework f...

Developing a Citizen-Centric Spatial Decision-Making System to Support the Process of Participatory Construction in Urban Distressed Textures

Todays, urban distressed textures are considered as a vital concern of managers, particularly in large cities. These areas, which also appear in official parts of cities, are vulnerable because of prospective problems. Lack of proper accessibility, services, facilities, and infrastructures, as well as social, economic, environmental and spatial problems, are key problems of these areas. Althoug...

Agent-based and Integrated Assessment Modelling for Incorporating Social Dynamics in the Management of the Meuse in the Dutch Province of Limburg

The European project FIRMA (Freshwater Integrated Resource Management with Agents) aims to improve water resource planning by combining agent-based modelling and integrated assessment to describe physical, hydrological, social and economic aspects of water resource management in an integrated way. This paper describes an approach that couples an agent-based model with an integrated assessment m...
